How to Choose a Business Name That Will Be Approved

Choosing a business name in Nigeria goes beyond creativity; it must align with the guidelines set by the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). Many business names are rejected daily due to non-compliance with CAC naming conventions. To increase your chances of approval, follow these steps:

  • Avoid restricted words: Words like “Federal,” “National,” “Government,” or any term associated with national security require special approval. Unless you have government backing or a license, steer clear.
  • Be unique: Ensure your name is not identical or closely related to an existing registered business. Use the CAC’s public name search tool to check name availability.
  • Be descriptive but concise: Your name should hint at what your business does but remain memorable and professional.
  • Don’t include misleading terms: Avoid words that misrepresent your business structure (e.g., using “Limited” for a business name that isn’t registered as a limited liability company).

Using a CAC-compliant name helps you avoid delays and get approved faster.
